We’re so excited to share with you our newest episode of Candid Convos, where we discuss virtual staffing in the new remote economy with a lawyer or other business owners who utilize virtual staff. This time, our featured guest is Otis Landerholm, the founding attorney of Landerholm Immigration, A.P.C., an immigration law firm based in Oakland, CA. We don’t always interview clients, yet in today’s episode, our guest is also one of our happy Get Staffed Up clients.
In this episode, Brett and Otis discuss his experience working with virtual team members. Touching base on how he was able to find great offshore talent at a lower price point, helping his law firm move to the next level and also saving his clients’ costs. COVID-19 created a very interesting dynamic where now many law firm owners are forced to experience firsthand how to work remotely. This unprecedented change has tested their previous systems, teaching them how to make things happen, and get stuff done for their clients even while working from home.
They also talk about how Get Staffed Up is not about replacing people, it’s about being able to add more services and do more for your clients. By adding offshore virtual team members, owners can have a better life by having a little bit of margin to comfortably grow their business, instead of constantly worrying about payroll. This also helps to create more jobs locally.
What does Otis say about GSU?
“Our first hire was for a role that we like to call ‘Case Manager’, and I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I was a little bit hesitant to start using overseas staff because I’m apprehensive. I want to make sure that our clients’ experience is outstanding and that our in-house staff is able to collaborate well and make decisions quickly on cases, working seamlessly within everything that we’re doing.”
“We hired Anna from El Salvador. She’s awesome, brilliant, and on top of everything. In the beginning, we had her call all of our former clients to do client satisfaction surveys. For satisfied clients, she would ask if they’d be willing to do a Google review for us. We more than doubled our 5-star Google reviews in 30 days. We went from 41 Google reviews to 106 in 30 days and that contributed to our SEO efforts getting up and to more clients coming in.”
“I’m actually grateful that this pandemic has hit because it forced me to up my game. I was able to figure out where we’re inefficient, where we’re totally dependent on our office space, and which areas of opportunity we could step in to make us a law firm of the 21st century. If we can do things remotely and make it work, then we don’t need to have staff in the California Bay Area. We can run a more efficient firm, run it more intelligently, and actually find better talent to help us move to the next level at a lower price point and thereby save our clients’ costs. So yeah, it’s been great!”

“I’m actually grateful that this pandemic has hit because it has forced me to up my game and to figure out where we’re inefficient, where we’re totally dependent on our office space and where could we step into that law firm of the 21st century where now we can do some things remotely.” — Otis Landerholm
“Get Staffed Up is not about replacing people, it’s about being able to add more services and do more for your clients.” — Brett Trembly
“I believe that having hired people overseas helps us to create jobs locally as well. It’s not that we hire locally or we hire overseas. If we hire overseas and that helps us build up our margin or that helps us become more profitable as a company, it allows us to grow locally and globally.” — Otis Landerholm
